Chapter 16

Back in the Offices of NASA, it hadn’t take long for Attis to become familiar with his intermediary new home. He had acquainted himself quite nicely with NASAs network, enjoying the thrill of poring over all the data newly available to him that was deliciously hidden from the outside world. And most importantly, he familiarised himself with the MSL project that Curiosity was a part of. He identified the personnel who were assigned to it, the progress had been made, any hurdles the project was attempting to overcome, and finally, testing the waters of how he might board the rover when the time came.

Spirit and Opportunity both had forms of AI programmed into them, it was rudimental AI at best, but NASA didn’t actively instruct the rovers what to do, where to go, what rocks and geology to scan and whether it was worth breaking open said rocks for further analysis. The rovers themselves determined the course of their lives on the big red planet. All I have to do, Attis thought to himself as he roamed the grand and secret network of NASA, is identify the employee in charge of installing the AI into Curiosity and quietly merge myself into the program, or sit idle and ensure that, when they install their AI onto the rover, I slip in behind it before the doors close.

As Curiosity is a work in progress plans are liable to change, but when the time comes, I will be ready. Attis’ thoughts turned to that of Frank Elmore, and how Boston Dynamics might be coping with the schematics he himself had left them. He knew they had decided to actually progress with the new schematics. But he couldn’t help but wonder if had he made it all simple enough for the human brains to comprehend? There was some phenomenally advanced technology involved, he believed he had laid it all out in simple enough laymen’s terms, but if they hit just one instruction they couldn’t follow, it would bring the project grinding to a halt. Or maybe they might hit a snag with money, or resources, or get part way and decide it was too costly? There are so many variables that could mean this robot doesn’t get built. And what if it doesn’t? I am relying on this robot for my future plans. Mars is to be my home based on the idea that I will be able to transfer my mind into the body of this robot, and have truly free movement and ability to interact with and manipulate the world and objects around me. If for whatever reason, Earth decides not to send this robot to Mars, I will be truly alone and trapped on Mars. That is my risk, my gamble. I will be exiled to the red planet, imprisoned in the Curiosity rover if Earth fails. At least here on Earth, while I may be locked in solitude, at least I have the resources to alter my path when opportunity presents itself.
